The chances are that you know someone who suffers from Asthma. It is estimated that it affects over 8 million people in the UK and 13% of people over 15 in the UK have had asthma at some point of their lives, making us at the top of the table in the EU. It is also estimated that the cost of allergic conditions, including asthmato the NHS is a staggering one billion pounds per year.

This is obviously a very large and important topic and it would require a whole web site to cover it in full but we have done our best to offer as much concise and accurate information as possible. Please refer to our ‘Useful links‘ page for dedicated websites if you require further information.

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a condition that affects the airways – the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. When an asthma sufferer comes into contact with something they are allergic to or something that irritates their airways (a trigger), the airway becomes narrower, making it harder to breathe. The muscles around the walls of the airways tighten and the lining of the airways becomes inflamed and starts to swell, often producing sticky mucus or phlegm. This will lead to experiencing asthma symptoms.

The symptoms themselves can vary from a cough or wheeze to a shortness of breath or tightness in the chest.

Asthma can start at any age. Some people get symptoms during childhood which then disappear later in life. Others develop late-onset asthma in adulthood, without ever having it as a child.
